Reiki, the word, is Japanese. It is written with 2 Japanese kanji, meaning 'spiritual energy'. It is often translated as 'Universal Energy'(or Universal Life Force Energy) in the West.
The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. If your life force is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When it is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick.
Life force plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and also is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life.
The existence of this "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

How does it work? |
We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.
When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
Reiki promotes a holistic balancing of the body, mind, and spirit and can aid in healing mentally, and spiritually, as well as physically. It can never do harm.
Reiki therapists do not diagnose, or prescribe treatments for illnesses, or mental or physical afflictions.
Reiki does not involve a cure, nor is it the therapist that does the healing. He or she simply serves as a channel for the universal energy, so the recipient*s body may heal itself. |
What does it feel like? |
Typically, having Reiki is a relaxing experience. It is reported by some to feel like waking from a restful nap. Some people report feeling warmth, or tingling. Since Reiki works on mind, body, and spirit, each person experiences Reiki differently. |

The History of Reiki |
| According to one version of history, Reiki was developed and discovered in the late 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui, who was a Buddhist monk, among other things. Some believe that Reiki was actually practiced by Tibetan Buddhist monks 2500 years ago, and Dr. Usui's "discovery" was actually a rediscovery. Reiki is not, however, a religion, and requires no specific set of beliefs to receive its benefits. |
